Main Bathroom

End to end

What we did:

  1. Create the structure for moving the bathroom upstairs (it was currently downstairs behind the kitchen)
  2. Added a skylight window
  3. Plasterboard the room
  4. Sand and seal the room
  5. Paint
  6. Create bespoke shelves

How it started

The main bathroom was at the back of the kitchen when we moved in. We thought this would be fairly easy to move upstairs as seemed to have been a popular thing to do already for many decades. As it was, it came with a number of problems that we weren’t expecting that we had to overcome.

What we did

  • Create the structure – There was already a toilet in situ which was in a former wardrobe from the back bedroom (we call the study). So we created the room by measuring carefully what was available to take from the back bedroom without making that feel too small.
  • Added a skylight window – well the builders did. We took a portion of the roof at the back and created a large skylight window. Even though the MVHR means we don’t need ventilation from a window, I much prefer to have natural light in a bathroom.
  • Plasterboard the room – the builders added plasterboard to internally insulate the room
  • Sand and seal the room – the bathroom furniture was already in situ by now and the tiles added. We discovered that you dont need to plaster the room in the traditional sense, which made sense here as the units were already installed. So we (well a willing victim / friend) spent ages AND AGES sanding down the whole room to make it smooth and then ages applying a sealing coat (which she noted was deeply unsatisfying as you couldn’t really tell it had gone on).
Our friend sticking at it and fast collecting brownie points!
  • Paint – Painted all the walls a deep blue to be in keeping and help the white units to pop.
  • Create bespoke shelves – none of the walls were exactly even so we spent AGES cutting plywood shelves to fit the spaces on an individual basis, then sealing, then painting.

Conclusion

Learning points: I would have put the shower higher as my partner is so tall, it’s not really high enough. Would have put the shower units closer to the head so it doesn’t take as long for the changes to feed through. Really love the skylight and the bathroom units, both in themselves and against the blue.
