Kitchen diner

End to end

What we did:

  1. Knock down the rear extension and remove the existing bathroom and kitchen
  2. Replace roof with a new insulated roof and skylights
  3. Add bifold doors at the back
  4. Fit the new kitchen

How it started

We completed on this house 1 month before Covid hit so how it started was us living in this sh*thole for a year. The kitchen roof leaked, the bathroom had mushrooms and a lake under the bath and there wasn’t much we could do about it. Pretty sure (even without the fact that trying to use 2 x hobs would trip the electrics – I guess that at least was working) an oven shouldn’t be plugged into a regular plug socket…

What we did

  • Knock down the rear extension and remove the existing bathroom and kitchen – this went wrong on day 1 when the builders used a diamond edged blade to take out the rear wall and didn’t leave enough supporting structure around the edges to enable us to use the existing brickwork to support the steel beam that needed to go in. This meant we had to fork out a lot of extra money for additional steal beams on either side. Not impressed.

  • Replace roof with a new insulated roof and skylights – the roof was already leaking and had to go. This was replaced with a new roof up to modern day building regs standards. You can see in the picture below how the windows are slanted, as was the whole roof to enable run off to the side.

  • Add bifold doors at the back

  • Fit the new kitchen

Caution: The builder knocked the breakfast bar out of place and didn’t notice. The worktop fitter then measured incorrectly and if my partner hadn’t spotted it, the quartz worktop would not have fitted.
