Renovations – week 14 (replacing the roof)

Why did the roof come off?

So the roof had to come off for several reasons:

  1. The tiles were shot. We’d had to patch the holes when we moved in 18 months ago and you could still see sky when we went to clear it out before moving out.
  2. The rafters were rotten. They needed replacing and the structure of the roof recreating.
  3. To upgrade the roof. So that it complied with building regulations and stopped losing so much heat!

The expectation was that taking the roof off would not take forever, it was the best weather window and it would be somewhat protected by a temporary roof that was put up. The reality was far from and certainly not helped by the strange weather over the summer during 2021.

What a house looks like without a roof

Our experience

The temporary structure wasn’t fairing so well in the pretty relentless high winds and heavy rain and at one point the tarpaulin which was supposed to be preventing it from raining inside blew right off. To be fair this didn’t actually make it much worse as it had been funnelling the water into the loft space to begin with and started to create mold damage to the ground floor walls..

The temporary roof (and sky)

At some point a roofer came over and rebuilt the structure for the front of the house:

When doing this you need to think about how high you want the windows to be. Previously we’d done a loft conversion and the windows were actually quite high for me to reach, so we agreed on a height of 1.4m so I could open them comfortably (I’m 5ft 4/163cm).

This is as far as we’ve gotten. It’s still raining inside..
